I was out getting beer with a friend of mine last week, and he remarked to me “Why are six packs so expensive?” I then went on a whole rant, because they make the most money off of them, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

He countered with “I’d probably buy more of them if they weren’t ten dollars. Six, or seven dollars seems more reasonable to me.” I hadn’t brought up my whole argument about 6 packs not being worth it. He was just a bit surprised that Red Hook was nearly ten dollars for 6, but twelve dollars for 12. They only difference he could see was that the beer was in a different box.

To be fair I did try to argue that we shouldn’t look just at the cost of a 6 pack, but the quality of the beer. He countered with “Sierra Nevada tastes the same in a 12 as it does in a 6, and I don’t need to pay ten dollars for only six of them when I can pay fifteen for 12.”

That’s when I stopped arguing. He had a point, and it was the point I had made before, or close to it. 6 Packs are overpriced, and if I have a choice between a 6, and a 12 I’m buying a 12.

I do buy Narragansett in 6 packs, but that’s because their lager goes for $5.99. A buck a beer is not bad, and when it comes in a 12 they go for $11.99. I’d probably buy more Sam Adam’s if they dropped their 6 packs to $6.99, or Dogfish if they dropped their prices on their beer to $6.99 too. That eight to ten dollar range for six is just a deal breaker for me.

Anyone else feel this way about 6 packs? Maybe you feel quality trumps price, so the price in the end doesn’t matter?
