There's something about the crisp fall weather that just makes it easier to get out and enjoy the city. We've got four ideas that will take you from Friday night to Sunday morning.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Montgomery Gentry
WHERE Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, 1131 N. Dupont Highway, Dover
WHEN 8 p.m., Friday
COST $49.50 to $100
One of country music's biggest acts, Montgomery Gentry, will take the stage at Dover Downs Friday night in support of their latest album, "Rebels on the Run," that promises to take fans back to their rowdy roots with country anthems that highlight the working class backgrounds of both Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry.
Montgomery said the duo's fans, whom they refer to as friends, have certain expectations that the band will leave it all on the stage when they perform, and the new album will let them do just that.
"It feels just like when we started out in 1997 when we cut [the] 'Tattoos and Scars' [album]," Montgomery said. "We … just had a ball writing and cutting the CD."
Seats are still available across several price points, ranging from $49.50 to $100.
SATURDAY: Fifer Orchards Fall Fest
WHERE Fifer Orchards, 1919 Allabands Road, Camden-Wyoming
WHEN 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday*
INFO (302) 697-2141, http://www.fiferorchards.com/
*The Fall Fest started Monday and continues through Wednesday, Oct. 31.
**Admission to the festival is free but some amenities and activities require a fee.
Is there a better way to spend the first official day of autumn than frolicking through a pumpkin patch, picking apples or navigating a corn maze? Fifer Orchards is hoping you love fall as much as they do and will bring the family over to celebrate the cooler weather and crisp tastes of fall squash, sweet potatoes and the last of the tomatoes. Or, you can dive into a fresh bag of kettle corn or a hot mug of apple cider.
But, there's more than just food. Saturday will include a petting zoo, hay rides, face painting, live music and a pumpkin train for the little munchkins.
The party won't stop, either, until Halloween so you'll have a chance everyday (except Sundays) to revel in everyone's favorite transitional season.
SATURDAY NIGHT:Dinner and live music at The Green Stinger
Page 2 of 2 - WHERE The Green Stinger, 492 Walnut Shade Road, Dover
WHEN Saturday, Sept. 21
COST Dinner prices vary; no cover for the band
INFO website under construction, check out the Facebook page
Dover has more than its fair share of local flavors and hard-core carnivores who haven't yet been by The Green Stinger don't know what they're missing. The restaurant features more than 25 giant hand-stuffed burgers packed with artery-clogging ingredients like cheddar cheese, baked beans or even pulled pork. But, they also sneak veggies like jalapeños, black olives or mushrooms into some of the recipes. One burger even carries pineapple.
These mammoth meals can be made to order, too. Co-owner Michelle Stabley said that she welcomes suggestions and has even implemented a few for the menu.
"We can do just about anything anybody asks for," Stabley said.
This weekend (and every weekend) you can pair your burger with a little live music. Saturday night's entertainment will be Drink, Drank, Drunk, who according to Stabley, always brings an awesome energy that manages to get full bellies up and moving with both modern rock covers and solid classics, too.
SUNDAY: Brunch at McGlynn's Pub
WHERE 800 N. State St., Dover
WHEN 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday
As the weekend winds down, why not let somebody else cook and clean on Sunday while you spend the day recuperating from the weekend and gearing up for the week ahead? That's just what McGlynn's Pub wants you to do with their weekly Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Get out of your comfort zone with a seafood omelet or try something traditional like the ham and cheese version. If breakfast fare is just not your thing, you can also order something from the regular menu.
There's even a little hair of the dog available with a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar that features more than 50 hot sauces and more than three dozen juices, seasonings and garnishes.
Menu prices range from $1 for side items to $10.99 for entrees. No reservations are necessary but it's never a bad idea to call ahead.
