Marian L. Harris, volunteer executive director of House of P.R.I.D.E. (People’s Rehabilitation Individual Development Enterprise), will receive the William J. & Rev. Shirley M. Smith Sr. Spirit Award on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Harris will receive the award at 7 p.m. during the Inspire to BE Smith Legacy Dinner at Dover Sheraton Hotel, 1570 N. Dupont Highway Dover. Tickets for the dinner are $50; $25 tax deductible. The reception is $250; $200 tax deductible.
For nearly 50 years Harris has advocated for respect and equality for the poor. She led the task force that shut down a drug trafficking operation, pushed for fair housing practices, and encouraged women to become more self-reliant.
For 15 years Harris has operated P.R.I.D.E. in her basement. Today the organization owns 13 houses that provide homes for clients who need help restoring their identity.
