  • Elizabeth B. Carlson of Wyoming, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on July 21, 2012.  She was 85 years old.
Elizabeth was born on August 17, 1926 in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late John Fay and Mary DeShields Fay.  After marrying her late husband, Arthur R. Carlson, Sr. her family resided in Fort Washington, PA.  She began her dedication to community service immediately by serving as the Chairman of the Jenkintown Christian Women’s Club and as Deacon and Elder at Abington Presbyterian Church.
Upon purchasing the Dover Volkswagen Dealership in 1974, Elizabeth and Arthur moved to Dover.  Elizabeth became active in the community by serving on several Boards:  Maple Dale Country Club, Central Delaware YMCA and Meals on Wheels.  Her involvement with the Modern Maturity Center was extensive, serving not only on the Board but also as the co-chair of the Center’s capital campaign, starting in 1988.  In that capacity, along with her husband Art as the other co-chair, she worked to raise the funding  necessary to transition the center from the original headquarters on Edgehill Avenue to the current location on Route 8.  The campaign was successful and supported the vision of improving the lives of Kent County’s senior citizens.  Since that initial campaign, the Modern Maturity Center has continued to grow and expand services and Elizabeth remained steadfast in her commitment to the center throughout those years.
As a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Elizabeth was an associate co-lay leader and a delegate to the Peninsula Annual Conference.  Elizabeth was an active and beloved church member, sharing her deep Christian faith with many.
Elizabeth enjoyed her sports, including golf at Maple Dale and Wild Quail Country Clubs and bowling with the Johnny Pros and Senior Bowling at Brunswick Doverama.  She was a “proud cheerleader”, never missing a West Chester University Football Game in the four years her son, Arthur Carlson, Jr. played for the team.
“Always a Lady”, Elizabeth will be greatly missed by many and especially by her loving Family.  Elizabeth is survived by her only child, Arthur Richard Carlson, Jr., and his wife, Lou Ann.  She never missed a holiday with her three grandchildren: Eric William Carlson, Christine Elizabeth Carlson, and Christopher Richard Carlson.  Elizabeth had one great grandchild, Kyleigh Ann Carlson Mohrman.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 26th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover, Delaware and a service in celebration of Elizabeth’s life will immediately follow.  Interment will be private.
The family is grateful for the care and assistance of Delaware Hospice and asks that in lieu of flowers donations be submitted to the Milford Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way in Milford, Delaware, 19963.
Letters of condolence may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
