A 62-year-old Dover man took his SUV for a spin Tuesday morning — right into the St. Jones River, according to Dover police and fire.

On Tuesday at approximately 7 a.m., Dover Police responded to the east side of Silver Lake Park for a report of a car in the water with the driver still inside.

Police said the officers found the vehicle, a 2008 Lincoln MKX SUV, in the streamside of the spillway and the driver was unresponsive.

One of the officers entered the water, forced entry and removed the driver from the vehicle pulling him to shore, police said. Eugene Lee, of the 100 block of West Loockerman Street, was then turned over to EMS who administered aid and transported the 62-year-old man to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.

Lee was later released from the hospital and charged with DUI and careless driving.
