Saturday’s spring-like weather helped to draw a crowd of estimated 3,000 viewers and more than 80 participating groups to the 18th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade through downtown Dover.


Saturday’s spring-like weather helped to draw a crowd of estimated 3,000 viewers and more than 80 participating groups to the 18th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade through downtown Dover.

Parade Grand Marshall, Brian E. Lewis, founder of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and member of the Capital School Board led the parade. Lewis was joined by 2011’s Great Person of the Year, Herb Konowitz, St. Patrick as played by Deacon Bob McMullen of Church of the Holy Cross, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus.

Parade award winners were:

Pot O’Gold (anything with wheels): The Wheelmen
  Rainbow Award (car clubs): Lone Wolf Outlaw Cruisers
  Blarney Award (best mascot): Chick-fil-A
  Aran Award (large animal): Cozy Corners 4-H
  Aran Award (small animal): Diamond Chihuahuas
  Green Machine Award (best float): Irish Society of Delmarva
  The Harp Award (best musical group, not a band): Dover Police Department Bagpipers
  Shamrock Award (best adult marching band): Delaware Technical & Community College Terry Campus Hammerin’ Hawks Drumline
  McNamara Award (best high school band): Polytech High School
  Emerald Isle Award (most authentic Irish theme): Steppin’ Seniors
  Leprechaun Award (best marching unit, not a band): 436th Air Wing & 373rd Training Group, Dover Air Force Base
  Mary Fitzpatrick Award (best overall): Irish Society of Delmarva
