A Dover robbery suspect was arrested Saturday shortly after exchanging fire with a Dover Police officer.
Smyrna's Hareem D. Mitchell was arrested Saturday evening after allegedly robbing DOT Discount then exchanging fire with a Dover Police officer. Dover Police also report that two of Mitchell's rounds struck two ocupied residences in the 800 block of S. Governors Ave.
At approximately 6:50 p.m. Saturday, Mitchell allegedly entered the DOT Discount 1255 S. State St., Dover, and produced a handgun. He allegedly pointed the gun at a customer and demanded money, then demanded money from the clerk and took money from both. Mitchell then fled on foot.
The first Dover Police officer on the scene observed Mitchell running and ducking behind bushes in the area of the Grange, 911 S. Governors Ave. The officer approached Mitchell, who then allegedly fired several shots at the officer. The officer then returned fire and as other Dover officers were arriving on scene, Mitchell dropped his gun and surrendered. He was taken into custody and the weapon was recovered as well as the stolen money.
Neither the officer nor the defendant was injured.
Mitchell, 22, of the 500 block of Barley Court, Smyrna, was presented at the Justice of the Peace Court Saturday evening.
