Ernestina Martin, of Felton, formerly of Smyrna, passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. She was 87.


Ernestina Martin, of Felton, formerly of Smyrna, passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. She was 87.

She was born in Bogota, Colombia on July 4, 1924.

She attended and graduated from the National Institute of Nursing and worked as a Red Cross Nurse during the April 9, 1948 uprising in Colombia.  Mrs. Martin had the honor to serve as the Presidential Nurse for President Lleras Restrepo from 1958 to 1960. She immigrated to the USA in 1963, and became an American citizen.

She worked in nursing at Riverside Hospital, Boonton, NJ until her retirement in 1983, and moved to Smyrna, DE in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guillermo Martinez; two brothers, Jorge Forero, and Bernardo Algarra; and a grandson, Nick Martinez.

She is survived by three children, Maria Giannetti, of Felton; Guillermo Martinez, of Parsippany, NJ; and Alex Martin, of Dover; three grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

 Memorial Services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St. Interment was private.
