Age 85, died Saturday, August 20, 2011, at his Dover home, surrounded by his family. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Homer H. and Emma (Lindale) Stayton, he attended schools in Dover and Milford, DE. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he worked in managerial positions for Masten Trucking, Milford, where he lived until 1967; Carpenter Motor Freight, Wilmington, and Elkton Trucking before retiring in 1985. He moved from Wilmington to Dover, DE in 1988.

Surviving William are his wife of 67 years, Olga (Gillespie) Stayton; son, William L. Stayton Jr. (Deborah), Dover; and daughter, Claudia J. Stayton, of Clayton. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Homer H. Stayton  Jr., Dover; half-sisters, Laureta Lane (Ray), Tallahassee, FL; and Frances Ellingsworth (Bill), Milford; granddaughters, Kristin Stayton Gibbons (Christopher), Lincoln; and Kimberly Stayton Gibbons (Jeffrey), Camden; and four great-granddaughters, Alexa, Jenna, Maya and Chloe Gibbons. He was also predeceased by brothers, Richard, Leonard, and Robert Stayton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, August 25, at Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, with visitation after 12 p.m. Interment will follow at Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Seasons Hospice and the Christiana Care Heart Failure unit for their excellent and compassionate care.
