Edward Robert Newsom, 66, of Dover, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.

Edward Robert Newsom, 66, of Dover, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, surrounded by his family at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1944, in Jamaica, N.Y., Mr. Newsom was the son of the late Catherine and Edward Newsom.

He grew up in Long Island, N.Y., meeting his beloved wife, Barbara, when he was 16 and she was 14. They married in 1965, and he lived a wonderful, happy life working as an oil technician and plumber for 28 years before he retired to Dover.

Mr. Newsom and his wife were blessed with six children, Melissa Greening and her husband Kyle, Todd Newsom and his wife Angela, Troy Newsom and his wife Camille, Jessica Barnhart and her husband Melvin, Rebecca Maness and her husband Robert, and Brett Newsom.

He and Barbara loved each other’s company and taking long rides in the country, parties at home with their children and grandchildren, watching his grandchildren’s games, and toward the end of his life being his wife and daughter’s mascot at Brunswick Lanes.

Mr. Newsom was knowledgeable about everything, an expert at cards, promoted “playing by the rules” and laughed his head off at the family’s jokes, which made him loved by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Constance, Carole and Evelyn.

In addition to his wife and children, Mr. Newsom is survived by a sister, Gloria N. Wood of Connecticut; 11 grandchildren, Blake, Reese, Casey, Frankie, Kaleb, Gregory, Kaylee, Bradley, Alex, Meghan and Daniel; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 2004; or the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801.
