Coming into this season, the Polytech High School girls basketball team knew it was going to be young, as it only had three seniors on the roster.

In order to be successful, the Panthers would need a few young players to step up and perform beyond expectations, and they’ve gotten just that in freshman Sarah Hillman.

In the first game of the season, a 44-37 loss to Indian River, Hillman stormed onto the scene, scoring 19 points and grabbing 23 rebounds.

In the two games that followed, she finished with 19 and 11 points, both wins for the Polytech girls.

Hillman sat down with the Dover Post on Dec. 17 to talk about the successful start to her varsity career.

Q You made quite a statement in your first varsity game as a freshman. Were you surprised at all by what you were able to do so soon?
A Yeah. The first game, afterwards, they told me the stats and I was just like, “nuh-uh.” I was really surprised. I didn’t think I could do that.

Q How much basketball experience did you have coming into high school?
A I’ve played since kindergarten in CYM, the Catholic Youth Ministry league, up until I got to Polytech.

Q With such an extensive background, then, did you expect to make varsity even though you were a freshman?
A A little part of me was expecting it, but a little part of me also said it’d be OK if I made JV … but I was pretty sure I was going to make the team.

Q What has been the toughest part about adjusting to high school and varsity sports all at once?
A Balancing sports with school and things like that. It’s been fine. But I hate late practices because I don’t get home until 8 p.m., and then I have homework to do. And then some of those nights I also have volleyball practice because I play club volleyball too.

Q What goals do you have for yourself going forward now that the bar has been set pretty high?
A The first game of the season I had 19 points and 23 rebounds, so I want to try and get higher than that. I want to get 25 points and 30 rebounds now.

Q The team started the first few games of the season with a winning record. How do you think things are going a few weeks in now?
A I think we’re moving ahead really well. We just learned some new plays and feel like we’re really hitting our spots right now.

Q This is the first year with the program for Head Coach Darrell Jones. What’s it been like playing for him?
A We all love our coach. He’s really funny. He can get really serious, but we get along with him great and do what we can for him in practice.
