Governor Jack Markell ordered state and federal flags lowered to honor the life and passing of State Representative Hazel D. Plant. Flags will be lowered on Friday and remain lowered until her memorial service is completed.
“Her spirit never faltered, never failed. People knew the physical pain she carried with her to work the last few years but she remained fully committed to what she and her husband had set out to do years before – improve the lives of everyone around them and be a voice for change,” Markell said.
Plant was first elected in 2001 to fill the seat her late husband Al O. Plant held for more than 20 years. Last legislative session, she was the Chair of the House Labor Committee and served on the Corrections, Judiciary and Housing and Community Affairs committees.
“It didn’t matter if you were meeting with her alone or with a group, in her state capitol office, in her living room or on her beloved Community Crossfire show. Hazel Plant remained the same person – insightful, inquisitive, compassionate and fully committed to fighting to make things better,” Markell said.
