George Harold Murr Jr., 82, of Dover, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 3, 1928, in Philadelphia, Mr. Murr was the son of the late George Harold Murr Sr. and Kathryn Dorsey Murr.
Formerly a resident of Broomall, Pa., he was a teacher and administrator who inspired thousands of students during his 38 years at Drexel Middle School in suburban Philadelphia.
Mr. Murr was a graduate of Temple University, where he attended on a full academic scholarship. After college, he served from 1950 to 1952 in the U.S. Army.
He was an avid fan of Philadelphia sports teams, enjoyed gardening and traveling, and visited 26 countries in his lifetime.
Mr. Murr was a committed Christian and an active church member, serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and lay leader at First Baptist Church in Dover and at Belmont Baptist Church in Broomall.
The focal point of his life was his family. He was a devoted husband and father, and leaves a legacy of lasting family traditions. He will be remembered for his love, goodness, generosity and a wonderful sense of humor.
Mr. Murr is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne A. Young; six children, Carol Russell and her husband Rev. Bud Russell, Nancy Dezan and her husband John, Rev. Robert Murr and his wife Lois Rhoads Murr, Michael Murr and his wife Lyn Soon Hull, Susan Flanagan and her husband Tom, and Jonathan Murr and his wife Becky Jo Brydebell Murr; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Murr Toeppe; and many nieces and nephews.
