  • A Magnolia man is in jail for allegedly raping and assaulting a woman the night of Oct. 26.

State police responded to a 911 hang-up shortly before 4 a.m. Oct. 27 and found the 28-year-old victim waiting outside in the 4900 block of South State Street, Magnolia.

According to detectives, the victim and Thaddeus A. Powell, 36, were involved in a domestic dispute around 9 p.m. Oct. 26. The victim left the residence and returned later in the evening.

When the victim returned police say she was confronted by Powell, who allegedly grabbed her by the hair, pulled her to the ground and assaulted her.

The victim tried to escape, but Powell allegedly blocked the door and prevented her from leaving the residence. When the victim went into her bedroom and sat on the bed, police say Powell “lurked” over then forced her to engage in an unwanted sexual act.

Later, the victim tried to call 911 but Powell hung up the phone immediately after the call was connected, police say.

The victim eventually was able to leave the residence and ran across the street until police arrived.

Powell is charged with first-degree rape, unlawful imprisonment, assault, strangulation and interfering with a 911 call. He currently is being held in the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in default of a $56,000 cash bond.
