Events connected with breast cancer education and awareness span the month, starting with Bayhealth Medical Center's Go Pink! Health Fair Oct. 1.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so screenings, fundraisers and education events will fill the calendar with all things pink. Here is a partial listing of local events.

Friday, Oct. 1

Go Pink! Health Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 540 S. Governors Ave., Dover. Proceeds from Go Pink! help fund the free breast imaging programs at Bayhealth, but also benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. This year’s event will feature displays from Delmarva Rural Ministries, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Bayhealth Oncology, Bayhealth Lifestyles’ Fitness Center, Bayhealth Outpatient Rehab, Bayhealth Education, Bayhealth Home Health Care, the American Cancer Society, Halpern Eye Care, People’s Place, Blood Bank of Delaware, Unison Health, Delaware Physicians’ Care, the Wellness Community, the Ribbon Cap Club, Pink Ribbon Boutique, Quality Insights of Delaware, Oncotype DX-Genomic, Siemens Medical Solutions and the Delaware Pharmacists Society, who will provide free diabetes screenings.

Saturday, Oct. 2

Wings of Hope breast cancer support group meets at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of every month at the Wellness Community, 812 S. Bradford St., Dover. For more information, call 734-0898.

Wednesday, Oct. 6

Free breast screenings will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6; Monday, Oct. 11; Wednesday, Oct. 20; and Monday, Oct. 25 in Dover, Milford and Middletown. For more information, call 744-6528 or 744-6773.

Saturday, Oct. 9

3K Walk for a Cure will be from 9 a.m. to noon (registration opens at 8 a.m.) at the Smyrna Clayton Learning Center, Power City Complex in Smyrna, 115 E. Glenwood Ave. Cost is $20, and pre-registration is encouraged. Groups of 10 or more walkers are $10 per person. Sunday, Oct. 10

Monster Miles for a Cause will be at 12:15 p.m. (registration opens at 10 a.m.) at Dover International Speedway. Dover International Speedway is opening up the Monster Mile for a fundraising walk that lets walkers circle the NASCAR track. Individual registrations are $25 per person, and children younger than 10 walk free with an adult. Thursday, Oct. 14

Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey program for those touched by breast cancer is held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at either Bayhealth Cancer Center in Dover or Milford. The October meeting, and every other month’s meeting, will be in Dover. The group is to help patients understand their breast cancer and learn about the resources available to them. It is sponsored by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and Bayhealth Cancer Institute. For more information, call 672-6435.


Women’s Mobile Health Screening LLC offers free or low cost mammograms to those who qualify. The van regularly visits locations throughout Delaware. For more information, call 888-672-9647. Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition peer mentor support program provides free one-on-one support and education to those with breast cancer. DBCC peer mentors are breast cancer survivors who help those who have been or are currently affected by breast cancer, including spouses, partners, family members and caregivers.
