The state of Delaware Department of Education has announced the names of 19 candidates for Teacher of the Year honors, including four from local school districts.

Nineteen of Delaware’s best educators representing each school district have been nominated for the distinction of becoming Delaware’s Teacher of the Year for 2011.

The 17 women and two men were chosen through a nomination process from more than 8,800 Delaware teachers statewide.

Locally, the nominated teachers are:

Edward F. Bittner, Polytech High School, Polytech School District Catherine DiBenedetto, Caesar Rodney High School, Caesar Rodney School District Pamela Sheldon, Lake Forest South Elementary School, Lake Forest School District Melissa White, Central Middle School, Capital School District

Announcement of the 2011 Teacher of the Year will be made Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover.
