The Dover/Kent County Metropolitan Planning Organization is looking for public input on proposed changes to include a Downstate Intercity Rail Connection Study in transportation plans.

The study would impact MPO’s FY 2010-2013 Transportation Improvement Program and FY 2011-2014 TIP. Any TIP changes require 30-day public review and comment periods, which will run from July 31 to Aug. 30.

The objective of the $900,000 study is to find out the feasibility of north/south passenger rail service through Delaware to Ocean City, Md. This is in response to requests for this type of service. In addition, as the population on the Eastern shore of Delaware and Maryland ages, the demand will increase to get to and from surrounding major metropolitan centers.

Money to pay for the study would come from the Federal Railroad Administration, the Delaware Department of Transportation and the state of Maryland.
