Three area businesses and respective owners received honors from their peers at the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce’s Awards for Excellence Dinner June 24 at the Sheraton Dover Hotel. Chamber of commerce members nominated fellow businesses and chose the winners for Corporation of the Year, Small Business of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year.

Winning the Corporation of the Year award re-enforces the team’s commitment not only to members but the community. A lot of people at Dover Federal Credit Union give back and not just through churches or little league, President/CEO David W. Clendaniel said. It’s also nice to be recognize by the business community and seen as an integral piece of the community, added Vice President of Finance Stephen Bellas.
The business model is unique where everyone is an equal owner, whether a teller in the bank or someone in line, Clendaniel said. Customers get the best return whether it’s lower fees or high interest rates for deposits, he added. The Dover Federal Credit Union is very committed to the credit union industry and helps lobby in Washington, D.C.

Beverly Knight said she was shocked to win 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year because she had such tough competition in her category, but perhaps becoming more visible in the chamber through the Leadership Central Delaware course she took helped.
She felt the award validates all the hard work she put in and shows how people can identify with a working mother who also raised four kids. When it comes to jewelry, it sells itself, she added, because people know what they want.
