  • U.S. Ted Kaufman (D-Del.) was presented with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 2010 President’s Award for his extensive efforts to promote the expansion of science, technology, engineering, and math education across the country.
Established in 1998, the ASME President’s Award recognizes prominent individuals and companies who have demonstrated significant contributions to the engineering profession.
Kaufman received the award following his remarks to the 2010 Engineering Public Policy Symposium, spokeswoman Amy Dudley said Friday, April 23.
The 2010 Symposium highlighted legislative priorities relating to energy, research, and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
“I feel so privileged to have the opportunity to tackle STEM issues as a United States senator,” said Kaufman, the only serving U.S. Senator to have worked as an engineer. “I’m also proud that Delaware is leading the way in STEM education.”
The Diamond State’s focus on these academic fields helped secure its recent selection as a U.S. Department of Education “Race to the Top” grant winner, he added. He believes the key to the future of America and the world, rests on the United States’ ability to use STEM to solve the major problems.
ASME President, Amos Holt presented Kaufman with the ASME President's Award, noting that Kaufman has inspired “a new generation of young people to pursue engineering.”
Since taking office last year, Kaufman has championed the expansion of education in STEM fields. Among other things, Kaufman, with Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), recently introduced the Engineering Education for Innovation Act – bipartisan legislation to authorize competitive planning and implementation grants to states to integrate engineering education into K-12 instruction and curriculum.
