Harry Eugene Clark, 81, of Hockessin, died Saturday, March 20, 2010.
Friends of the late Harry Eugene Clark, 81, of Hockessin, may attend a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Cokesbury Auditorium, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin.
Mr. Clark died peacefully Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, following a courageous battle against cancer.
He was born July 3, 1928, in Milford.
Mr. Clark graduated from Dover High School in 1946 and received an undergraduate degree in history at the University of Delaware. As a member of the U.S. Air Force, he worked as a Russian linguist for the Air Defense Command in Alaska during the Cold War. After his honorable discharge in 1955, he earned a graduate degree in mathematics at the University of Delaware, and then went to work for Hercules Inc. as a research mathematician, retiring in 1989.
He then taught mathematics for 22 years as an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware.
Mr. Clark was a member of the Blue and Gold Club, the Delaware Astronomical Society, Common Cause and Delaware’s Pacem in Terris.
For the past 15 years, he was a stalwart of the Academy of Lifelong Learning, teaching courses every semester in a variety of subjects. His many interests, hobbies, and depth of knowledge surpass any attempt to list them all.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Byron Clark; his first wife, Jean Walker, and his second wife, Dr. Marcia Fragner.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife of 11 years, Barbara Sachs Miller; his sister, Anne Rogers of Fruita, Colo.; his nieces, Valerie Johns and her partner, Vickie Forster of Hockessin, and Erica Johns of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; a nephew and his wife, Geoffrey and Maureen Johns of Carbondale, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Kristine Stott of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Carey Miller of Trappe, Md., and their families.
Funeral arrangements are by the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, Newark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Clark’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle Commons, DE 19720.
