October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the DBCC is trying to raise awareness through events up and down the state.

    The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is getting the word out for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, starting with a presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1,  for the  Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at DSU. Cheryl Doucette will be doing a presentation where women will hear from several survivors. It will be held at Jenkins Hall.

   The DBCC will be setting up an  information table at a health fair Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescents in Dover. Doucette will have a table set up and be able to talk to mothers and grandmothers as they arrive at the facility.

    The Nurture with Nature series invites all breast cancer survivors to meet others while kayaking from Coursey’s Pond to Killens Pond with teacher/naturalist Deloris Donnelly (a six-year breast cancer survivor) Wednesday, Oct. 7. Participants should wear their most comfortable walking shoes that can get wet. Transportation is available from the DBCC’s Dover and Lewes offices, or participants can meet at the sites. This event is free for all breast cancer survivors.

    On Thursday, Oct. 8, guests are welcome to “Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey” at Bayealth Cancer Center, 540 S. Governors Ave., Dover. Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients are encouraged to attend the event to learn about breast cancer and about the resources that are available. There will be light refreshments and free gifts.

    Those who are interested in becoming Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition peer mentors can attend training from 5 to 9 p.m Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Eden Hill Medical Center, second floor conference room, 836 North St. Training is for survivors interested in mentoring individuals who are newly-diagnosed with breast cancer. A light dinner will be served, and space is limited.
