The Lake Forest High School football team has looked like a whole new program so far this year, as it has opened the season at 2-0, outscoring its opponents 60-34 in those first two contests.

The Spartans (2-0, 1-0) will look to improve to 3-0 when they take on Mount Pleasant High School at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, on the road.

Head Coach Fred Johnson said the early-season success is a testament to how hard his players worked over the summer, and that the extra time they put in is really showing through how early they were able to hit their stride.

“We had a lot of football players that ran track and played baseball this year,” Johnson said. “And once school was over a lot of the committed to coming to the weight room four days per week.”

He added that a lot of the kids on the team have finally matured into juniors and seniors, and after some rough years are playing with a slight chip on their shoulders.

“Over the years we’ve had kids that were playing varsity as freshman and sophomores, and they were taking a beating,” Johnson said. “But those kids stuck with the program and now they’re juniors and seniors, and now for those kids, it’s time for them to give some of that back to their opponents.”

For the Spartans to stay perfect so far this season, however, Johnson said they cannot take Mount Pleasant (1-1, 1-0) lightly.

He said the team the Spartans will be facing also is on the rise, making the game a battle between two teams that are making a comeback this year.

“I’m expecting a hard-fought game,” he said. “We both have a bunch of athletes that are very fast and skilled kids.”
