Delaware State University, along with the University of Delaware, announced Tuesday morning that the two schools' football programs would play each other in a regular season game this year, as well as three other games in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

After years of debate and discussion of whether the schools should play football on a yearly basis, Delaware State University announced Tuesday morning that it will have a scheduled game against the University of Delaware in the 2009 football season.

The game will mark the first time the two teams will meet in the regular season when they play Sept. 19, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, Newark.

In addition, the Hornets announced that beginning in 2012 the two programs would start a three-year stretch where the teams will play once per year in the regular season.

Future games and opportunities for the teams to meet will be considered at the conclusion of the three-year period in 2014.

The Hornets and Blue Hens have met once before when they clashed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2007 Division I-AA playoffs.

Led by now-Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, UD won that game easily, 44-7.
