Nelson B. Reed, 89, of Dover, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.
Friends of the late Nelson B. Reed, 89, of Dover, may call on the family at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where services will be held at noon.
Mr. Reed died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Courtland Manor Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1919, in Hazlettville, he was the son of the late Walter Reed and Florence Coverdale Reed.
Mr. Reed was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. After his discharge, he was the Bond Bread delivery man for Sussex County. He later was plant operator and shop steward for Diamond Cold Storage and Ice Company for 19 years and then went to work at his brother’s body shop, Reeds Body Shop. For 12 years Mr. Reed worked for Boulevard Electric delivering appliances, retiring at the age of 74.
He was a horseman and had owned “Miss Ruffy Y” who won the Governors Cup in 1992, and a member of the United States Trotting Association.
Mr. Reed pitched fast pitch softball and baseball in Dover. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Naomi Davis Reed, on April 30, 2008.
Mr. Reed is survived by two sons, Nelson Brian Reed of Felton and Ronald D. Reed of Hartly; three daughters, Deborah Archambault, Sandra Reed and Terri Hunter, all of Dover; three sisters, Margaret Edge of Michigan, Olive Montague of Dover and Vesta Barnes of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
