A rundown of all the area's high school sports of the past week.


Softball
    The Caesar Rodney High School softball team won its first round game against Laurel in the state tournament 3-1 on May 21.

    Megan Bilbrough and Stephanie Hearin each hit solo homeruns.

    Jillian Olmstead pitched a four-hitter, struck out seven and walked two to earn the win.

    The team then won its quarterfinal matchup against conference rival Smyrna 5-0 on Saturday.

    Hearin hit two home runs, Bilbrough hit one and Olmstead picked up the win.

    The Riders advance to the semifinals where they will face Caravel Academy at 5 p.m. tonight.

Boy’s Tennis
    The Caesar Rodney High School boy’s tennis team failed to have any of their team members reach the finals of the state tournament.

    No. 1 seed Kevin Papen, who entered the semifinals at 90-0 with three state championships under his belt, was eliminated by Matthew Blake of Salesianum. The sets were scored 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (11-9).

    Papen was the only member of the Riders to reach the semifinals.

    The Dover High School boy’s tennis team had both its first and second doubles pairings qualify for the semifinals of the state tournament, yet both failed to reach the finals.

    Ryan Heaney and Greg Beard of St. Andrews ousted the first doubles pairing of Michael Macchus and Jordan Maximo 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

    In second doubles, Rob Saltsman and Mike Rocel of Charter defeated Nathan Adamson and Chris Maximo, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1).

Girl’s Tennis
    The Caesar Rodney High School girl’s tennis team had one representative left at the end of the state tournament, as their first doubles team of Macy Farrell and Olivia Schachte made it to the finals.

    Maggie Mauk and Bridget Sauer of Archmere, however, defeated the pair. They made it to the finals after defeating Serena Walker and Ilbelise Smith of Brandywine, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

    Becky Campbell of Sanford eliminated second singles player Heather McMasters in the semifinals in straight sets of 6-4, 6-3.

    The Dover High School girl’s tennis team had the last remaining members of their team in the state tournament eliminated in the semifinals this past week.

    The second doubles pairing of Megan Dempsey and Hannah Andres was defeated in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, by Amanda Lamb and Alison Celello of Archmere.

Girl’s Soccer
    The Caesar Rodney High School girl’s soccer team, for the second straight year, advanced to the state semifinals this past week, after beating Sanford in the quarterfinal round 4-0 on Saturday.

    Jazmine Reeves scored twice for the Riders who are advancing to play defending state champion Padua at 7 p.m. tonight at Wesley College.

    The Dover High School girl’s soccer team was eliminated from the state tournament this past week after falling to defending state champion Padua 7-0 on Saturday.
